The Descent of the Holy Name

Srila Sridhar Maharaj

Transcribed by Acyutananda Das, Nabadwipa, 1976

The relationship between mundane and transcendental sound is exactingly described herein, as well as the contrast between ascending and descending methods of God realization. A systematic presentation of how spiritual sound encapsulated within ordinary sound exerts its influence of the body, senses, mind, intelligence and, most importantly, soul, is presented as well as the progressive results of that transcendental influence.

Divine Service

Srila Sridhar Maharaj

The distinction between the mundane and transcendental forms of the Holy Name of Krishna is explained and how the seeker can progress from physical to spiritual association with Sri Krishna-nama. The transformative mood of service and how it is gradually acquired is explained herein.

So, nothing about Krsna, His name, form, qualities or pastimes can be touched by our physical or mental senses, but when we have a serving attitude He comes down to us of His own accord. Only then can our tongue really pronounce the name of Krsna, otherwise only the physical sound of the letter of the name can be produced."

Ecstacy of the Name

Srila Sridhar Maharaj

Srila Sridhar Maharaj describes the process by which the transcendental sound of the holy name of Krishna transforms one's consciousness. Entering the ear, transforming the heart and then reverberating upon the tongue, the Holy Name of Krishna produces spiritual ecstasy of unequalled intensity. Here the esoteric aspects of chanting the pure name of Sri Krishna are explained as they were expressed by the modern saint, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur.

"The holy name of Krishna enters the ear with such a great force and current that the ears are captured, and one thinks that only two ears are insufficient; he wants millions of ears to attend to the sweet current entering the ears. Two ears are nothing to him; he wants millions of ears. The nectar of the holy name is coming like a flood through his ears, pushing its way within the heart."

Firing Blank Mantras

Srila Sridhar Maharaj

The Maha-Mantra is the Absolute encapsulated in sound form. Srila Sridhar Maharaj presents the way by which we can understand the Lord's presence in the name as a transcendental inner sound current. Importantly, the process by which we can actually experience the Absolute potency of the Holy Name is explained; with a a serving attitude endeavoring to please the Lord we can take His Divine Name and connect with the transcendental current present within the ordinary sound.

Our tongue, our hands, physical sound, all these mundane things cannot come in touch with Krishna. Some intervening medium is necessary to connect this body with the supramundane. And that connection is our earnest desire to serve Krishna, to satisfy Him."

Jewel of the Vedas

Srila Sridhar Maharaj

The system of revelation known as sruti or sabda is presented herein: that which can be grasped by the ear, the sound form of the revealed truth which has descended from above. The sound based system of revelation combines so many sounds in order to give a full impression of the whole reality but their purpose and emphasis is upon a central, original sound. That sound is the holy name of the Lord, Krishna, which is the reservoir of all sweetness.

"The branches of the Vedas are all sounds, and so many sounds must come from a central position. They cannot but direct one who has a proper eye towards that fountainhead of sound, saying, 'Go! Run towards that direction! In our source you will find everything."

Discussion with Magnus Hirschfield of Berlin (1931)

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur

This article was the sparking inspiration to form the Unbound Sound Collective.
